“In the shadow of the moon”
BY THE NOVICE GARDENER
The black cat creeps the concrete
The woods owl hoots a warning
A car serpentines its way, zigzagging
The wasted driver can not see the street
A child leaves the group and decides to stray
To look at the Frankenstein display
Just on the edge of the pavement
Exactly at the point of moment
That the driver blinks and closes his lids
And finds himself unable to stop the skids
In the shadow of the moon
The black cat glints its eyes and arches
The woods owl freezes and changes its tune
Feathers ruffle to follow quiet hisses
To mourn for a child taken too soon
(See Update!)
Oh, I know, I know, it’s morbid and sad. Hey, it’s a Halloween post, and it’s a reminder for everyone out there to be careful and responsible. Let the fun night ends safely and happily for children and adults alike!
Here’s something that will make any child or adult happy,
Cobweb Cupcakes
These are red velvet cupcakes with cream cheese frosting and chocolate cobwebs as edible decorations. The cakes came out of a box of mix, unfortunately, but you wouldn’t do that. You would make them from scratch, I know, and then you would share your red velvet cake recipe, wouldn’t you? I’m waiting.
Cream cheese frosting
3 cups powdered sugar
1 (8 oz.) package cream cheese, softened
2 tbsp. coconut oil or butter, melted
1 tsp. vanilla
In a large bowl, mix cream cheese and coconut oil/butter. Beat until smooth. Add powdered sugar, 1 cup at a time, and vanilla. Continue beating until smooth.
How to make the chocolate cobwebs:
1. Melt dark chocolate morsels, either in a microwave oven or a double boiler.
2. Put melted chocolate in a piping bag or a ziploc bag, cut a tiny hole from the tip of the bag.
3. On a piece of wax paper, pipe a star/asterisk first, then pipe the webs.
4. Let chocolate cobwebs harden, then peel them off from the paper.
I’m not sure I articulated the directions well, but the photos should help you figure them out.

Spooky Spiders
How cute are these spiders? My daughter and I made them together. In fact, she came up with the idea. She made cakepops with the leftover red velvet cake mix, in her trusty Babycakes cakepop maker. Then, we sliced them in half, dipped the tops in melted chocolate, sprinkled with edible glitter (cake sparkles), added pieces of licorice lace for the legs, pieces of white chocolate for the eyes, and pieces of jelly beans for the nose/mouth. Aren’t they adorable?

Update: This is the weirdest thing. My husband rarely visits or reads my blog, but he managed to read this post, and immediately requested that I make a change in the poem so that it has a happy ending. Didn’t know my writing affects him that much, and didn’t know he is such a softie! So, here goes:
“In the shadow of the moon” (continued)
Slowly I wipe my tears
My pillow soaked quite wet
It’s still dark, not morning yet
I call out but nobody hears
It’s nothing, only a nightmare
No child was taken or harmed anywhere
I love your pictures… and your halloween treats are so so cute. Great job!
Thanks, Namrata. The pictures were a pain to take. It was late by the time I finished making the treats, and I always have problems with my lighting, something I need to learn still. Luckily I was able to shoot a few good ones. So glad you like them! 🙂
– Love, love, love everything about this post. Please tell your daughter that she has done a great job with the spiders, and please tell your husband what a lucky guy he is to have you in his life.
– You are a Renaissance woman of the blog world! Cooking, designing, decorating, photography-ing, writing poems and above all, a super sublime personality!
Happy Halloween! I’ll take three each of the clever cobweb cupcakes and spiders, please. 😀
Definitely showing your comment to my girl AND my husband! The latter, especially, must see it, lol…
Thanks, Fae, for the compliments. Not too sure about the Renaissance woman, but I’ll take the sublime personality! 🙂 You are much too kind, dear friend. I love your visits, always! xoxo
Scary in the loveliest and tastiest way…so much beauty and fun for my eyes I would put the having a bite or 2 on hold. 🙂 And your poem…fits the mood really well!
Thank you, Ese, for the encouragement. You’ve given me the motivation I need to keep writing poems. I figure that’s the only way to improve, yes? xoxo
They say practice makes perfection…well…i kind of agree but also think – either there’s the vibe for it inside or not. And you definitely have it! 🙂
You are so creative. It’s such a pleasure to go through your blog
Thanks, Elizabeth, what a lovely thing to say! xoxo, Angie
Angie, holy cow. Talk about a blog post. Affecting. You are a good writer – great diction and you have something to say.
So interesting that your husband had you change the poem – mine never reads my blog, either. HA.
Your daughter’s adorable spider’s are perfect for the holiday. She is very creative!
Oh, and I am a sucker for cream cheese icing. It makes me happy (even after reading the initial poem! ;-). Everyone, yes – be careful out there.
Recipe + Photos = Fab.
Thanks, Shanna! Did I tell you how happy I get whenever you come visit? 🙂 My girl is also a good writer, by the way. That’s really her forte. I will show her your comment. It’ll make her happy!
Cream cheese frosting is absolutely my favorite, too. Cream cheese, period, is my favorite thing. I’ve been known to eat it by the spoonful, lol… Happy Halloween to you and family, Shanna!
Angie –
Your sweet girl sounds fabulous (like her mom!). I won a little poetry contest at in fifth grade… It’s been writing ever since. I can see that you gals have the same passion (and much talent!!!!!). Isn’t writing fun? You have a voice.
Oh, gosh, cream cheese icing – please place it on my hips now. Or my stomach. HA. I adore it on carrot cake and hummingbird cake, as well. I will keep reading (and enjoying) your posts. You have a gift for writing, photography and connecting with your readers/viewers.
Be safe and be well! 🙂
I love what you have created, wow. I just wish I had your patience and talent. They look fabulous and lots of fun to make.
Give them a go, Maggie, the spiders especially, are not that hard to make. Require patience, yes, but like you said, were also a lot of fun! Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment. xoxo, Angie
