Weeds are occupying my hanging planter that used to house cilantro. The consequence of neglecting a planter.
But this one right here looks almost edible. What is it?

This next one I know. Stinging Nettles. At least now I know. It stung me. Ouch, ouch…
It’s edible. Should I try it?

Weeds are taking over the world.
You could be right. They’re already taking over my backyard. I’m ordering a truckload of mulch! π
I just did the same. Insidious weeds!
Some can be pretty, but always in the wrong spot!
Ha it’s the truth they are popping up everywhere in my back yard
Lol. You have my sympathy! π How’s Nando? Sorry haven’t been keeping up.
Nando died 2 weeks ago it was horrible Angie I have been so upset and have not done a blog post since then
Oh no, so very sorry to hear. I’m crying with you now. He was a good dog; I’m sure he’s in heaven. Hugs, Suzanne. Be strong.
Thanks Angie. It is a tremendous loss and I miss both he and Izzy so much. They were such a huge part of my life.
I understand. I grew up with 7 dogs. Maybe that’s also the reason I’m reluctant to give my kids a pet. But oh, they beg and beg. So now we’ve registered and been approved to adopt from a local shelter.
I have never not had a dog really maybe a few years but for the majority of my life they were a constant. I think it’s wonderful you will be adopting from your local shelter, give a shelter dog a home it’s the best thing you can do. Wonderful!
bloody weeds.
Now, now…some of them are vegetables π
I enjoy eating my weeds!
I don’t know for sure, but could the first one be arugula? It also looks like a weed that grows here, though. I don’t know what it is called. It seems like it might be painful to eat Stinging Nettles! Ouch!
It looks like arugula but it’s not ‘coz I also grow arugula and they’re not exactly the same. I heard stinging nettles are tasty but must be boiled first to get rid of the sting. I just don’t know if I want to handle it. The sting was pretty intense!
I too thought it looked most like arugula, but not the usual kind you grow in the garden or buy in the shops. It looks like perennial arugula, which I think of as a sort of wild variety. The leaves will have that delicious peppery taste and it will soon have yellow flowers if that’s what it is.
Aha – I knew Hilda would know! I’m growing arugula. I planted a packet of seeds. Oddly it seems like two different types of seeds as one looks like your ‘weed’ and one looks more like the arugula I buy at the store.
I’m so glad you posted your weeds!! π
I hope it’s wild arugula; that would be cool. As soon as I get home from my vacation I’ll give it a nibble to find out. π
But they do taste remarkably similary, and the perennial one you never have to plante – just watch to see where it pops up. I pot any extra and give it away to my lucky children.
I thought of rocket too, have you dared to try any??
Not yet. Still away from home right now but I’ll give it a try as soon as I get home. Just a tiny bite, of course and then wait to make sure I don’t get any adverse reactions. That’s how you’re supposed to approach any unknown plant!
Makes sense to me!!
Just follow your mantra and ‘fritterize’ them! Perhaps blanch and wring them out first
Good idea! Will do!
Hilda needs to come up for a recipe for this weed!!!! Weeds are my garden soecialty. <*#?%^+%?%^?!!!!!
Lol, I understand the frustration, Johanne π Here I am trying to be kind to Mother Nature and grow everything organically but she rewards me with weeds! I just bought a gallon of Roundup but haven’t used it. So reluctant to do it!
I use it so much, but no recipe. It is just great in salad or sandwiches. I”m glad to see others are using it too. But I think I do have recipes for nettles, although they are interchangeable with any recipe for cooked spinach or lambsquarters. Enjoy your weeds!
I have the same thing growing in my garden and was wondering the same thing! Didn’t know it was a weed. Thanks!
No problem, it’s important to unite against weeds, haha… Although I do love some of them. Some are tasty and some are even pretty!
That’s really interesting! If it is edible that would be quite handy.
I don’t know what the first is. I once tried to make a pesto from stinging nettles and I have to say it tasted quite vile, maybe I did something wrong. I then moved on to nettle soup but couldn’t quite get along with the flavour. However, fritters as suggested above might work better, they are very plentiful! π
I tried exactly one leaf each, by “frying” them in the microwave. I didn’t think they were bad. Of course they became barely anything, just some tiny crunchy things the size of my fingernails, lol! This is the first time I see stinging nettles in person. It doesn’t seem to have any seeds??
No I can’t remember any seeds. And I bet they were much nicer crunchy! Perhaps just not my thing but am sure you will make something delicious! π
But how do they spread if they don’t have seeds? I’m seriously considering keeping both weeds. I may regret it later but that’s another worry for another time π
Maybe the seeds are just tiny things? They do spread quite a lot I know, not sure what the other pretty weed is and nettles are quite hardy as well! π
The other weed turns out to be some kind of lambs quarters, the oak leaf kind. Edible as well.
oh that sounds delicious π perhaps better for a pesto than the nettles! ha ha
I’m going to stick to fritters for now, lol!
π sounds like a great plan!
