A wonderful sweet fragrance permeates the deck area. I get to enjoy it every time I stepped out on it. It’s coming from these pretty flowers.

Easy to grow, not needing much care. I wish I had planted more. I think I will.

Rosemary

rosemary salmon

O, dear Rosemary!
You’re a prize in the kitchen.
So delicious with chicken.
Lovely even with salmon.

Out of this world with potatoes.
Surprisingly sublime with tomatoes.
But I’m in complete woes.
O, dear Rosemary!

How do I keep you happy?
How much water and sunshine do you need?
Should I let you be as if a weed?
Will you please tell me?

They say rosemary is perennial, and some of my friends report their rosemary bushes grow up to their waists. Sometimes even blooming! I have never been successful in making mine come back every year, let alone bloom!

The key with rosemary, I think, is to leave it alone and not pamper it. Don’t overwater or overfeed, both of which I tend to do. I guess you can say I’m killing my rosemary with kindness.

Unless, of course, my problem is that I clip it too often and too much. Like when I made that salmon.

Recipe –> Broiled Salmon with Rosemary & Lemon Zest-Infused Honey Soy Sauce Glaze

Peach Blossoms

edible peach blossoms

My peach tree is in bloom. I have yet to taste a single ripened fruit from this tree, even though this scene recurs every year for the last five years.

This is a Flat Wonderful Peach and it suffers from brown rot. Before the fruits reach a decent size, they usually start rotting. Anybody has suggestions what to do? Organically?

The flowers are supposedly edible in small quantities (according to Green Deane of Eat The Weeds), but I’m not taking chances. I’m only using them to decorate my Thai Beef Salad.

Oh, and Happy Earth Day!!

Fiesta Friday #363

Fiesta Friday #363

While shocking images coming out of DC were being broadcast all over cable networks, I was quietly busy in the kitchen trying out recipes from our Fiesta Friday friends. And for that, I was immensely thankful. Nothing eases my mind quite like baking. The Sweet Potato Scones above were inspired by Jess’s Sweet Potato Biscuits. […]

Fiesta Friday #362

I’m getting ready to make a leftover-steak salad. The inspiration came from Petra’s Steak Salad, featured down below in the Features section. To go with the salad, I’m thinking of making the Persimmon Vinaigrette, also featured below. Then… and it’s a promise, I will go to the store and get sweet potatoes. To make Jess’s […]

Happy New Year, guys! Don’t forget to eat your donuts. For good luck! Or black-eyed peas. Or collard greens. Or pomegranate. Or pork. Or whatever your family tradition is. It’s all cool. Over the years, my family has adopted several of these fun traditions, so I figure we’ll do …uh… everything! We’ll eat a little […]

Fiesta Friday #360

Hello, Fiesta Friends! Merry Christmas to you and your loved ones! May your socially-distanced holidays be filled with joy and hope. And may you and your family continue to be safe and healthy. Also, world peace! I just want to say that 😄 Last year around this time I was at Disneyland, enjoying Pineapple Dole […]

Fiesta Friday #359

A Nor’easter brought the first snow of the season. How quickly things changed! Last weekend I was getting quite the workout (read: I was sweating) raking leaves in the garden with temperatures downright warm at 60 degrees. I’m glad I had the opportunity to clean up out there before the storm came. I expect my […]
